Provinces + Territories
Saskatchewan
Welcome to Saskatchewan
Our adventure through the provinces takes us into Western Canada, where fields of wheat and living skies characterize a region of endless possibility and horizons. Journey through wide-open plains, rolling hills, and thousands of lakes, all the way up to the Taiga Shield. We will tunnel through Moose Jaw, pass through the capital city of Regina, and study the wide variety of wildlife in Prince Albert National Park. As we travel, we will learn about the First Nations, the fur trade, and how the resources both above and below ground changed Saskatchewan’s economy for good. We will also look at the land that is home to the sunniest spot in Canada and host to many long, hard winters. Take a closer peek at the provincial symbols, like the western red lily, the sharp-tailed grouse, and the paper birch tree. Then learn more about the life and accomplishments of Saskatchewanian Tommy Douglas.
Saskatchewan’s Story
Learn how the First Nations used the land’s resources to thrive. Then follow along as Europeans chased dreams of wealth and trade, farmed the province, and moved on to utilising riches above and below ground after the Great Depression.
Land of the Living Skies
Study up on one of Canada’s prairie provinces and learn how Saskatchewan’s location makes it a land replete with sunshine, 100,000 bodies of water, rich soil, and very few mountains or trees blocking your view. Travel to the state capital, Regina, along with plenty of provincial parks and the Moose Jaw tunnels.
Iconic Symbols
Learn all about the provincial emblems by studying the western red lily, the sharp-tailed grouse, the paper birch tree, and the walleye. Then peek at the interesting boreal forest to the north, replete with moose and a short but splendid growing season.
The Language of the Land
Enjoy vocabulary words, riddles, poetry, and creative writing assignments based around Saskatchewanian themes. Throughout the unit, students add information such as provincial facts, symbols, industries, and notable people to a cumulative unit project.
Artistic Bites
Students will learn about how to use perspective and draw horizons in their art while also learning about birchbark biting and designing their own provincial symbol.
Sunshine and Science
Explore lessons on vitamin D and sunshine, the power of pemmican, animal digestion, and fertilizer. Students will also read up on Tommy Douglas and study how his childhood motivated him toward change as an adult.
Simple Stories
Read about the historical importance of beaver pelts and delve deeper into what the Bible has to say about trends and materialism. Families will also study limb differences and prosthetics and learn how God calls us to see others.
